Lucy is on the Potty!

So about 3 months ago, I bought my 22 month old daughter her first few pairs of knickers. (knickers is such a cool word, so much better than panties or underwear!).  She took to them immediately and within a week or two I was asking her which she wanted to wear, nappy or knickies?  At the same time, I bought a potty but with one very important rule… the potty had one place and it was to remain there at all times.  I think it’s confusing for a child being potty trained for the potty to be moving all around the house.  It needs to be in one place all the time and can’t be slipping and sliding all around the place either, make sure it’s on a towel or matt. I would only put knickers on her at a time that suited me, like when we were at home relaxing or on holiday.  Her school also asked me to put her in a nappy with the knickers over so she could get used to pulling them up and down (brilliant!)  During the times she was wearing knickers, she would wee in them but, this time she would notice and tell me that she was weeing because she could feel it and see it… and smell it.  Unfortunately this also happens with poo but at least it is somewhat contained.  Slowly but surely, she would start telling me before she was about to wee and eventually, (it took a few turns), I would get there in time.  Then, she started making her own way to the loo/potty and after a few… or many turns, she made it time.  We are now at a stage where, she is warning me 10 times an hour because she’s so chuffed with herself.  It gets quite annoying, I won’t lie, but I am using the opportunity to get her to practice pulling down her pants and lifting her dress and putting it all right again afterwards which she still struggles with a bit.  It’s bit trickier for the girls than the boys.

What did I learn from this:  Patience, tolerance, patience, deep breath.  But don’t take anything away from yourself, this is as much your achievement as it is hers and after being through it once before with Jack, it still remains one of the biggest milestones of motherhood for me so far!
